Urethrocystoscopy

Urethrocystoscopy is an endoscopic examination performed with a tool called a cystoscope through which it is possible to explore the urethra and bladder cavity.
Cystoscopy is crucial to the diagnosis and control of some bladder diseases, primarily of the bladder neo formations. This examination is usually performed under local anesthetic outpatient regimen, using local lubricant gels containing local anesthetic.

On the day of the examination, the patient will have to undergo oral antibiotic prophylaxis.
The complications of the method are represented by infections (urosepsis, epididymitis, etc.) and hematuria. Late complications linked to excessive urethral trauma, are represented by urethral stenosis, a very rare occurrence.

If, after urethrocystoscopy, there are symptoms such as high fever, conspicuous blood loss with urine, acute urinary retention, the patient must contact the GP or the Emergency Department of the Hospital.
